1 What is SWOT analysis?

SWOT analysis is a strategic planning technique that helps you identify and evaluate your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Strengths and weaknesses are internal factors that you can control or improve, such as your skills, knowledge, talents, values, and passions. Opportunities and threats are external factors that you cannot control, but can influence or adapt to, such as market trends, demand, competition, and regulations. By analyzing these four elements, you can gain a better understanding of your current situation, your future goals, and the actions you need to take to achieve them.

SWOT analysis is used to evaluate how you can use your Strengths to overcome your Weakness, make the most of the Opportunities and Threat prevention. In terms of a Student, this really helps them to first be aware of what they are really good at or what they are interested in because not everybody is good at something by default. A well drawn SWOT, will help you better understand yourself way more than you previously had, plus it will help you paint a better picture for your future as it provides clarity into what type of person you are and what are your advantages and disadvantage.

2 How to do a SWOT analysis?

To do a SWOT analysis, you need to ask yourself some questions and write down your answers in a four-quadrant matrix. For example, to identify your strengths, consider what you are good at, what you enjoy doing, and what unique qualities or abilities you have. To identify your weaknesses, think about what you are not good at and what areas of improvement or development you have. To identify opportunities, consider the current or emerging trends or needs in your field of interest, as well as any resources or support that you can access or leverage. To identify threats, consider the challenges or risks that you face or may face in your field of interest, as well as any potential negative consequences or costs that you may incur.

  • To counter potential imposter syndrome, or to yield a more accurate analysis, also consider gathering insights/views/data about your strengths and weaknesses from others (family, friends, colleagues, supervisors...).It might turn out that how others perceive, describe, understand you or the way you "present"/"market" yourself to others can be a crucial strength, weakness, threat, or opportunity for success/failure/improvement/refinement.Self-evaluation/analysis first, then gather perceptions/views/analyses from your network.

First and foremost is to identify Strengths. One of the thing I would like to do is to look over the past for the things or type of things which you have been really good at while enjoying doing it at the same time. After identifying, your Strengths, you can just flip those to get your weakness - now this isn't how you should do it but if you are really struggling to find your weakness generally you should look at the opposite spectrum. For instance, you might be really good with facts and figures but poor with theories and assumptions. For Opportunities, you should always look outward. An opportunity can have many faces but you should be able to recognise it and execute on it as soon as you realise this is an opportunity that best (1/2)

3 How to use SWOT analysis to choose a major or career path?

Once you have completed your SWOT analysis, you can use it to compare and contrast different majors or career paths that interest you. You can do this by creating a separate SWOT matrix for each option, or by adding more columns or rows to your existing matrix. Then, you can evaluate each option based on how well it matches your strengths, how it addresses your weaknesses, how it exploits your opportunities, and how it minimizes your threats. You can also weigh the pros and cons of each option, and rank them according to your preferences and priorities. The option that scores the highest or best fits your criteria is the one that you should consider pursuing.

A SWOT is a really innovative and insightful way for students to think about their direction in the classroom and in their career. When students think carefully about the internal aspects—their own Strengths and Weaknesses—they will gain clarity around what is really “in their wheelhouse” and what is not. Some work on the external aspects—the Opportunities and Threats in the environment—will spotlight growth areas for employment, new jobs that are emerging, and jobs that might go away.Comparing the list of professions that will be in demand, with what interests you, is a great way to think about your major and possible career direction.Don’t just chase the money or the hot field; think about what you are good at and what interests you.

  • One thing I've found quit helpful is to additionally create a ranking of my priorities/objectives/goals (either prior or post conducting the SWOT analysis) AND a sort of Pareto analysis (post SWOT) for each item to complement the SWOT. One Example for Pareto Principle Guidance:- economic downturns are always a threat, however, how likely is it to really affect my industry/position, what is the magnitude of its negative effect?->to establish how much of available resources I should/can allocate for mitigation/elimination of threat or what kind of resources I need to acquire...Why Pareto Principle?->It's one thing to know about the SWOT aspects, however, I need a strategy for constraints like time, funds, location, availability...
