Preparedness of Photojournalists

  • A photojournalist must be prepared to act fast and have his camera always at hand. It is important for him to be present at right place at right time. The photo one takes will become interesting one if he is alert on the incidents happening around him. There are some events which he is already aware of like any sports events, cabinet meets etc. it helps him to be there on time and be ready with all the equipment՚s he wants.
  • But there are some spot happenings like terrorist attacks, natural calamities which no one can predict, and he has to be there and took photographs which describe the events clearly. It indicates his presence of mind and interest in the job. The best picture is always the result of his judgement and sensitivity. There are some factors which are taken into consideration by photo editor to select relevant photos as below:

This is different in the case of doing a photo feature. While doing s photo feature a photojournalist had to be more careful. If someone is doing a photo feature on people, he has to wait a long time and take photos with originality without being the people more conscious.

Ethics and the Photojournalist

  • Ethics is important in journalism. Like in any other department ethics is important is dame in the case of photojournalism too. A photojournalist must take the photos which say true stories. Truthfulness is one of the min ethics a photojournalist has to follow. This issue of ethics has become more important in the digital age when it is very easy to change the photograph on the computer. Camera never lies, but with the technologies available today there can be many editing՚s and corrections in the original photo taken.
  • All manipulation of photographs is a violation of basic journalistic ethics. The photojournalist must only photograph what has happened, when it happened and not invent a situation or recreate one by moving things around in the picture to make it seem more interesting than it really was. It is also against journalistic ethics to stage or create a picture by having people pose for the camera. A photojournalist who takes his professional responsibilities seriously would never manipulate an image or stage an event for the benefit of his camera.

Photojournalism in India

Photography arrived in India almost within two years of its discovery. Like many other things British՚s introduced in India, they were the ones to introduce photojournalism in India.
