WHAT MAKES A GOOD PHOTOJOURNALIST

Being a good photojournalist does require some skill sets. Here are some skills we believe are necessary in order to succeed.

1) Curiosity - Having a child-like curious mindset is important when finding the right photos. Everywhere you go is an opportunity waiting to be captured. Having a curious mind allows you to explore and venture out into areas with new perspectives. While we recommend venturing out to new areas, don’t discredit your own neighborhood. There’s a saying “Sometimes the things we really want are right in front of us. We just don’t see them.”

2) Compassion - Being able to connect with people is not only an important trait in photojournalism, but also in life. While you’re out there behind the camera taking pictures of people, being able to empathize with them will lead you to getting powerful shots. Often times, people want their stories to be told, so learn to listen and understand these people.

3) Creativity - Like any other creative field, creativity plays a huge role in finding the best way to convey a photo. Having a good sense of photo angles, lightening, and editing can help figure out ways to convey the emotion you want through your photo. By having an understanding of this alone can make a simple photo a great one.
