We’re All Extremely Into Jamie Tartt’s Headband, Yes? (2024)

Jamie Tartt (doo doo doo doo doo doo) is back and he’s bringing with him an accessory we’re all obsessed with, right? On the latest episode of Ted Lasso, Phil Dunster’s co*cky, talented footballer Tartt has officially returned to Richmond, outfitted in the team’s official kit — as well as that headband I couldn’t take my eyes off of.

Now, his arrival received mixed reactions from those at the football club, ranging from disappointment to delight, but we just may have a new and improved Jamie. While I, for one, would binge-watch an entire season of him on Lust Conquers All, that moment at the end of Episode 2 when he steps back onto the pitch makes me smile a devious little smile every time. What a delicious moment to end the episode on. And while it was fun to watch dejected Jamie, I’m even more into trying-to-be-a-teammate Jamie.

I’m not saying the headband has magical powers, but now that he’s got it on, Jamie is apologizing to the group for being a twat, he’s willing to earn his spot back and show his fellow footballers he’s both working hard and deserves to be included, and he’s standing up for what’s right. He takes one for the team and tells Led Tasso to chill out, and it’s Jamie that stands up as the first non-Nigerian member of the team to cover up the Dubai Air logo on his jersey in solidarity with Sam. And the craziest part about it all is: he means it.

Maybe that session with Doctor Sharon really worked, maybe he’s a changed man who has truly learned his lesson, or maybe that headband simply has him seeing straight. It should also be stated: he looks hot with it on. He just does. It’s full England soccer player Jack Grealish vibes, so it doesn’t just feel authentic to who this character is…it also looks great. It’s a hot hairstyle made even hotter by the accessory.

But if one wanted to dive a little deeper than just the aesthetic (and if you don’t that’s fine too, job well done purely in the way it looks), the headband could symbolize a bit more for Jamie. It represents the fact that he’s getting his hair, his head, and his heart together, and making sure they all stay put in one (correct) place. Nothing will impact his vision for what’s truly important. This is not a reckless, freewheeling lad anymore. He knows he has to work hard, be nice, and mean it in order to not only stay employed but stay true to himself. I’m even intrigued by the choice to go for a shiny plastic version instead of the stretchy elastic kind.

Dunster has been excellent in his portrayal of Jamie this season, elevating both the co*ckiness and charm of the character while also injecting some genuine sensitivity and vulnerability that only makes the footballer funnier, sweeter, and yes, fitter. It would’ve been easy to write off Jamie Tartt and be annoyed with Ted for bringing him back. But because of Dunster’s performance, it feels right to trust him and root for him once again. Or hey, it could simply be all about the headband.
