What Prince William and Kate Middleton's Adelaide Cottage looks like (2024)

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s young family of five will live at Adelaide Cottage on the Crown Estate in Windsor, Berkshire, for the majority of the year. The arrangement was confirmed by Kensington Palace on Monday.

Adelaide Cottage is a four-bedroom property on the Crown Estate in Windsor, located within Windsor Castle ’s grounds, Home Park. It was last renovated in 2015, and is near Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's UK home, Frogmore Cottage.

The move will mean the Cambridges will be much closer to the Queen, who has spent most of her time at Windsor Castle in recent years. The family are currently living in Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace.

Where is Adelaide Cottage?

Adelaide Cottage is in Home Park, the 655-acre private Royal Park of Windsor Castle, in Windsor, Berkshire. It is to the east of Windsor Castle and around half a mile’s walk from their grandmother’s home.

It is also located just minutes walk away from Frogmore Cottage, where Meghan Markle and Prince Harry lived in between May 2019 and March 2020. The property was then briefly home to Princess Eugenie, her husband Jack Brooksbank, and their baby son, but it is still officially leased to Prince Harry through the Crown Estate.

What does Adelaide Cottage in Windsor look like?

The property was rebuilt on the site of an old Head Keeper’s Lodge in 1831 by Sir Jeffrey Wyatville as a “cottage orné” (decorated cottage) and is Grade II listed. It was built for Queen Adelaide, the wife of King William IV, as a summer retreat.

Outside the four-bedroom home is covered in a white render, “stucco-faced”, with a slate roof. The home is two storeys high and features a grand water fountain in the front garden.

Inside the home is anything but plain, with the main bedroom featuring a “coved ceiling with gilded dolphins and rope ornament reused from the Royal yacht ‘Royal George’”. It also features a “good marble Graeco-Egyptian fireplace”, Historic England states.

The home was last given a full refurbishment in 2015, which contributed to Cambridge's decision to move to the “modest” home. A source told The Sun : “They were adamant they didn’t want anything too showy or anything that needed renovating or extra security so as not to be a burden on the taxpayer."

Simon Rhodes is said to be occupying the cottage currently, Daily Mail reports. He is the son of the Queen’s late first cousin and best friend Margaret Rhodes who died in 2016.
