Wedding photography: glossy vs matte?

Jan 8, 2013

I need help with printing wedding photos. Please note I am not a professional or a wedding photographer so bear up with me. I am just an amateur photographer who has been assigned by my aunt to print her wedding photos and I am doing that for her as a favour.
I live in Toronto, Canada so I went to Black'sand printed few photos as a sample and I really liked the colour reproduction, price (17 cents per print for 4x6, 5x7, or 6x8), and resolution/details. I printed some photos on glossy paper and some on matte paper (Black's printing software call it "normal" but I am guessing normal means "matte".)
I asked the Black's staff there and he said glossy is recommended for weddings, and I also liked the glossy prints because it does not show the textures of the paper as the matte does. I asked my uncle and a friend, who both have experience as wedding photographers, and they said matte paper is better for wedding photos because it is not as reflective as glossy paper and does not leave finger prints on the paper as glossy does, and over all it looks better.(I am putting the photos in an album so I am guessing the images will be reflective anyway because of the plastic sheets covering the photos. And this prevents finger smudges.)
I guess there is no right and wrong answer here, but I just want to know personal opinions on what is preferred: matte or glossy for wedding photos put in an album?
Thanks a lot and I am looking forward to your helpful replies.

I prefer neither glossy or matte.

Most weddding albums that I do and have seen over the years are done with luster or satin papers. 98% of my albums are satin.

Personally, I print all portraits and the like on luster paper. Glossy and Matte are too extreme in each direction.

That said, I would think the obvious answer would be to...drum-roll... ask your aunt. They're her pictures, why wouldn't you ask her what she prefers? And if she says they both look fine, well then, either will work.

Finally, I'm sure your aunt has copyright authority to make prints of these wedding pictures? Right?

The thing is that my aunt lives in another city (4 hrs away) and she asked me to print the photos because the photographer (my uncle) was too busy with personal matters to print them for her. He is not a professional wedding photographer yet, but he does photograph weddings if asked by family and friends. He has a website but he doesn't do photography for a living...yet. He told me that he would print them in matte if he had time, and now it looks like I am going with matte too.
I printed samples and liked matte too but hated the the fact I can see the paper texture (paper fibers?) in the matte. I couldn't see that in the glossy and that's why I asked you.
Thank you for your replies. I learned something new! I had never heard of satin paper before. I am actually going to read about it more now.
